PerkinElmer Optoelectronics has been working with Eglin AFB to develop a shock hardened version of the PerkinElmer Optoelectronics Blue ChipTM Detonator. The Blue ChipTM Detonator is a chip slapper detonator that has been designed to support a wide variety of weapon systems needs. It uses commercially available components wherever possible to minimize cost and reduce component obsolescence. The work with Eglin was to study the effects of high shock on the standard detonator, as well as to develop a detonator that would be less susceptible to shock. Detonators of both the normal Blue ChipTM design as well as shock hardened versions were subjected to various shocks, either on the Eglin Very High G Shock machine or by firing them through concrete walls. The detonator design and test results will be presented.
